Effective Poster & Flyer Advertising

Long before the invention of the printing press, or even paper, people were advertising, announcing and attempting to gain influence through the simple yet highly effective process of posting notices with eye-catching fonts and imagery in public forums and thoroughfares.

Throughout their long history posters, pamphlets, flyers and billboards have become part not only of marketing culture, but of the arts and popular culture in general. Which is why decades, or even centuries, after their inception we can all still call into mind vivid images of Wild West "Wanted" posters, classic Hollywood movie posters or wartime propaganda and army recruitment posters with Uncle Sam or Lord Kitchener. Indeed this most time-honoured form of visual persuasion has given mankind some of its most recognisable and iconic personages from from Ché Guevara to Santa Claus to Eva Herzigová's traffic-stopping clevage on 90s Wonderbra billboards.

There is another reason, too, why posters and flyers have been with us for as long as they have. Not only are they a remarkable method of turning heads, conveying messages and persuading people, they are also incredibly cost effective. Today it's becoming ever cheaper to print out hundreds or even thousands of full-colour flyers or posters either at the local copy shop or at home with colour laser printer. However successful flyer campaigns have nothing to do with numbers, effective visuals are the name of the game.

Think about it; say you're looking to hire someone to do some work for you - like a a builder, mechanic, handyman, repairman, tradesman, whatever - which guy are you going to hire? Bob, the guy with the cheap, crude photocopied A4 sheets with bad clipart and Comic Sans text on the front, or Joe, the guy with the professionally design, glossy, full colour flyer? In the end Bob's flyers get droppped in the gutter whilst Joe's phone starts ringing off the hook. Why? Because we automatically associate the standard of a person's work with the standard of the advertising materials they hand out.

Same deal with a poster, your poster needs to really stand out and grab people's attention, not merely to turn heads but literally stop people in their tracks so that, even if they're in a hurry, they cannot control the impulse to stop and read what's on it. If you still doubt the power of posters let me leave you with one last example: Think of the last time you had an election in your area and try to see if you can you remember what the loosing side's posters looked like. Can't remember? That's ok, we can't either, but if you want to elect a winning graphic design team contact us today
